Deciding to take on the role of a caregiver for an older adult is a big decision that will affect all aspects of your life. If you are a parent of younger children still living in your home, you need to take into consideration how this role will impact your own family. Providing care for another person can have many positive lessons in love, respect, commitment and dedication to those young eyes that will be watching and hopefully helping you.
At an early age, my grandmother exposed me to the world of caring for older adults. As I look back at that time in my life, I can clearly see now how that exposure helped shape me into the person I am today. I find that I feel the most comfortable and myself in the presence of older adults because of what I learned from her. Her ease and compassion for the older community was always a positive experience for me filled with laughter and fun.
If you are a parent of young children and are assuming the role of a caregiver, the impact of what you are doing for another person will be remembered by them for the rest of their lives. Don’t forget that those young eyes see everything!
